               I probably shouldn&#8217;t have taken that last bite.  You know the one. . .  the one from that second piece of pie which followed the second helping of turkey and mashed potatoes.  Now I&#8217;m two days out from Christmas dinner and still feeling the after effects.  I&#8217;m also a few days away from New Years. . .  2010 has a nice even-numbered ring to it, like it has some special significance and you should have an extra special resolution this year.  As many of you know, I&#8217;m going to be headed off to some special military training in a few months, but unfortunately I&#8217;ve kind of let myself go (I can thank my lovely girlfriend Britt &#8211; who is an amazing cook).  When I&#8217;m at my fittest, I&#8217;m about 175 lbs and right now I&#8217;m teetering around 190+.  Probably closer to 200 given the amount of holiday calories I&#8217;ve been shoving down my throat.  But I digress. . .  My mission for 2010 is to get back to a fit and trim 175 lbs and here&#8217;s how I&#8217;m going to do it.  1.  Eat a whole lot more. . .  Often that is.  The first step in conquering the battle of the bulge is to get your metabolism working again.  By switching to a meal plan consisting of 6 controlled portion sizes, you fuel your body constantly and don&#8217;t load yourself up with more calories than you can burn at one time.  Because we live on the go, it&#8217;s important to plan ahead so you don&#8217;t get stuck without something to eat and have to resort to empty fast-food calories.  Get ziplock bags, storage containers, etc. , ahead of time. . .  I just got a Foodsaver vacuum sealer for Christmas (thanks mom) which I&#8217;m really excited about.  The weekend before your work week, or whenever you can squeeze it in, pack some snacks in 200-250 calorie increments.  Try to pick things that your body can use right away: eliminate white refined sugar, refined carbohydrates, trans fats, synthetic foods, and overly packaged and processed foods.  It&#8217;s not easy to rid yourself of these foods from your diet, but if it looks like its got a lot of packaging or processing don&#8217;t put it in your cart at the store.  (FYI, when you eliminate these unhealthy, prepackaged foods, you&#8217;ll end up saving a LOT of money in the process. ) Find a good meal replacement shake.  Now most of you know, I sell a great protein shake and you can purchase the Zrii Nutriiveda weight management system here.  This one is a superior product than store-bought ones, but if you must, slimfast can work ok too.  It just has a lot more synthetic ingredients than does Nutriiveda.  Lastly, determine what your main meals are going to be.  Substitute one or two meals with a replacement shake and a piece of low-sugar fruit (think bananas not oranges).  Then eat a meal capable of fitting on a small saucer.  Your protein (ideally grilled chicken or fish) shouldn&#8217;t be much bigger than a deck of cards and if it is, throw away the excess.  I know granny always fussed at us about wasting food, but generally speaking granny died of heart disease and needed a triple bypass when she was 60, bless her soul. . .  Ahem, where was I. . .  Oh yes, eat.  You&#8217;ve gotten your snacks, you&#8217;ve planned your meals and got your shakes &#8211; now EAT! This is the fun part.  Using this method you can eat about every 1 1/2 hours or two hours and just graze like a cow. . .  mooo! Imagine that, grazing like a cow to keep from being one in real life! Make food a part of your life &#8211; not an afterthought.  Don&#8217;t work like mad and skip lunch then gorge yourself at 3 p. m.  We all know how hectic work lives can be, but if you keep a healthy snack handy you can keep from suffering the effects of poor eating habits and the excess pounds that go with them.               At first glance, it may not make sense to be both overweight and a perfectionist, but the two are connected.   &#13;<br />
Logically, we know that there is no such thing as perfect.   But does the emotional drive to be perfect affect you and your weight?  A lot of people stay at a heavier-than-healthy weights simply because they are rebelling against the idea of perfect.   &#13;<br />
Being thin might make life too good.   Often, when life is good, we cling to the &#8220;blemish&#8221; of excess weight, as if having an obvious flaw keeps us human.   As much as we say we want a &#8220;perfect&#8221; life and strive for it, the prospect of actually achieving it is somehow frightening. &#13;<br />
Then, what would I do?  Conversely, weight is often the ultimate excuse for not achieving certain goals or objectives in life.   We ask ourselves &#8220;What if I lose weight and I&#8217;m still not happy?&#8221; or &#8220;What if I lose weight and I still don&#8217;t meet the partner of my dreams?&#8221;  Living with excess weight means choosing the more convenient and familiar excuse of &#8220;I am fat,&#8221; rather than actually taking action and facing the unknown or possible disappointment. &#13;<br />
Procrastination is perfectionism.   If diet and exercise can&#8217;t be done perfectly, the perfectionist will put off doing it at all or sabotage good efforts.   We may eat in a healthy manner for breakfast and lunch but, when an afternoon &#8220;cheat&#8221; or &#8220;slip&#8221; occurs, we throw away the rest of the day.   Forgetting that there are 1,440 minutes in a day, we let 3 minutes ruin our efforts entirely!  Perfectionism is a convenient and ever-ready excuse to blow the healthy eating effort. &#13;<br />
Perfectionism leads to some interesting thought patterns and it can be either self-oriented or other-oriented.   &#13;<br />
Self-oriented perfection occurs when we measure ourselves harshly against a high bar of achievement.   When perfection is not reached, we might punish ourselves with excessive eating or mental torture.   &#13;<br />
Often, knowing we are not perfect, we focus heavily on the other things in life that are not perfect, slipping into other-oriented perfectionism where we become critical of others, especially thin people or people who effectively control their weight. &#13;<br />
Another way perfectionism shows up is when we lose weight, but don&#8217;t reach a desired goal weight or appearance.   Many overweight people want to become runway model thin, and anything less is a source of frustration.   The subsequent dissatisfaction then leads to a regain of the lost weight. &#13;<br />
After all, if we measure our lives by perfection, we are unable to see every day successes, even the small ones. &#13;<br />
If you measure others by perfection, we&#8217;ll find it hard to love and appreciate the people in our lives. &#13;<br />
And if we measure our weight by perfection, we deprive ourselves of being satisfied and happy with our bodies.   Being content with our physical bodies is a basic human right and a natural way of existing.   After all, we were satisfied with our bodies at some point in life, before our conditioning through media, society and others taught us we should be physically different than our natural shape and size. &#13;<br />
The choice to be happy with a healthy weight, even if it isn&#8217;t model-thin, is a necessary choice in order to be successful long-term.   And that means leaving perfectionism behind with the extra pounds.            </p>
